The homeowner can also choose to design the island to match the rest of the kitchen. The same counter tops and cabinet stain color can be used to achieve this. However, if the materials or colors used for the rest of the kitchen cabinetry are unique, the homeowner may have trouble finding a correct match for the island. Islands that match the theme of the rest of the area give the room a classic look. A matching kitchen island looks like it was part of the original installation and is good for a homeowner that doesn't want the piece to look like a later addition to the room.
If you have an older home where there just isn't any room to build in a dishwasher, you'll find that a kitchen island will provide you a space where you can put one with no problems of door clearance. Maybe you will want to add pull-out bins for trash and compost materials, lots of extra counter space, a wine cooler, or a pull up shelf to house your stand mixer. You will find different models of pre-built kitchen islands in about as many configurations as you can think of, and many of them are on casters so that you can move them around if necessary. Stationary islands are also available and can be built in so that there's no chance of them moving.
For a smaller kitchen where cabinet and counter space is tight, island carts can alleviate some of the clutter. Many of the carts are equipped with shelving, drawers or cabinets. These can be used for extra storage of pots, pans and accessories. The carts can also hold items that usually take up a lot of counter space, such as blenders, mixers, toasters or microwaves. By lessening the amount of clutter in the kitchen's cabinetry and on the kitchen counters, the kitchen cart can allow the kitchen to look more open. It can also offer more space to the homeowner for preparing meals.
